This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
1 John 1:5 (NKJV)
There is natural light and there is spiritual light, and natural darkness and spiritual darkness. We are all greatly blessed by the natural light and warmth that come from the sun, otherwise we would be cold and in darkness. As I was reading the scriptures, an idea came to my mind to throw some light on the subject of ‘Light and darkness’.
In John 1:4-9 Jesus is identified as ‘light’: ‘In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man…was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.’
This world is in spiritual darkness because of sin, but Christ has brought light to those who sit in darkness. Matthew 4:16, quoting the prophecy of Isaiah, tells us: “The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned.” Jesus applies the title ‘the light of the world’ to himself: ‘Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” ’ (John 8:12). Truly, anyone who follows Jesus Christ will never walk in darkness again.
It is God who calls us ‘out of darkness into His marvellous light’ (1 Peter 2:9) through repentance and belief in Jesus our Saviour (John 3:16). There was a time in my life when I was blinded and deceived by the god of this world until the light of God shone upon my heart ‘to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.’ (2 Corinthians 4:4-6).
Our future is bright and glorious in the city of the New Jerusalem as we read in Revelation 21:22-23, ‘But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. And the city had no need of the sun or the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminates it. The Lamb is its light.’ Although I do not have the capacity to truly comprehend it, yet I do believe.
Prayer
Abba Father, Sovereign God Almighty, and the Lamb of God who is the Light, and the Holy Spirit our guide to all the truth, I thank and praise you in Jesus’s name, Amen.
